As we move towards Easter Sunday we have all sorts of things going on both here at Sunnyside and with the wider church in the town. As we move towards Holy Week, we are able to spiritually prepare ourselves for the celebration of the Risen Christ, but also remembering all that he suffered before the victorious day.
We’d really encourage you to make time to gather with God’s people here at Sunnyside throughout this important time in the church’s calendar.
Palm Sunday 20th March
Services: 8, 9, 10.30, 6.30pm.
We remember Jesus arrival in Jerusalem as crowds gathered to see him enter riding on a donkey! There’s palm crosses for all to take away as well!
Monday 21st – Wednesday 23rd March
8.00pm – 8.40pm: Guided Reflection
Each night there will be a simple prayer meeting in the church based around a reflection on a passage from scripture as we continue to journey with Jesus throughout Holy Week.
Maundy Thursday 24th March
8.00pm – 9.00pm
We start the three day celebration of Easter by remembering the Last Supper. Jesus shares bread and wine with his disciples and forewarns them of what is to come. Join us as we share communion together.
Good Friday 25th March
10.00am: Berkhamsted High Street
A short service in the high street gathering with the other churches in Berkhamsted for a public witness to Jesus. We worship, pray and gather together right outside Waterstones. It’s a visible sign to the town that the church is alive!
12noon – 3.00pm: Three-hour reflection
We gather together over three hours in half an hour slots for a reminder of Jesus’s ordeal on the cross. People come and go on the hour or half hour throughout the time. It’s a unique experience of remembering the death of Jesus in this quiet reflective way. You don’t have to come for all three hours – feel free to stay for as little or as long as you’d like!
Saturday 26th March
8.00am – 9.00am
We meet in the Breukelman room for breakfast and prayers with this usual gathering – feel free to join us!
3.30pm – 5.30pm
Fun for all the family! All the usual Messy Church fun with a special Easter twist. See here for more info.
Easter Sunday 27th March
Jesus is alive! We celebrate Christ’s victory made once and for all over death with this special day of worship services.
7am: Sunrise Service @ Berkhamsted Castle
Join us for half an hour with this early morning service as we gather with the other churches in the town to celebrate the risen Lord.
8am: Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer)
Worship at Sunnyside begins with this ancient service of communion, with the traditional words written in 1662.
At Sunnyside we like to celebrate significant occasions by gathering together for breakfast. Pop in anytime between 8.40am – 9.40am and share a special breakfast with the wider church family.
United Easter Celebration
10.00am – 11.00am
Our usual worship service gathers the whole church family to worship the Risen Lord – don’t miss out!
As you can see, there’s lots happening throughout the week, we’d really encourage you to join in with as much as possible. If you’re in church on Palm Sunday and then again a week later you can get the sense that you’ve missed a huge chunk of the easter story, which is essentially the story that defines our faith. This easter, let’s journey together and celebrate together as God’s united people at Sunnyside Church.
