Raise the Roof, Raise Raise the Roofs!

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN AND WHY?
Due to its having flooded twice last year, the Breukelman Room has been out of commission for 10 months.  We have insurance money ready to spend on re-equipping it, but the PCC is advised not to do so until a new membrane has been applied to its flat roof.  In addition, the cedar shingles on the Hall’s sloping roof are at the end of their 30 year life.  Replacement of the shingles by a natural slate should ensure a 75 year life & prevent both the recurrence of moss &, provided that we keep the Hall gutters clear of leaves, to avoid flooding.
WHEN WILL WORK START?
The simple answer is as soon as possible!  Planning permission was applied for in early June.  We also need the consent of the Diocese, which should be a quicker process.  However to speed matters up, the tendering process for a roofing contractor is to run in parallel with the planning.
HOW MUCH WILL THIS ALL COST?
A professionally prepared estimate is £170,000, which excludes VAT at 20%.  However, there is a government backed grant, which repays our VAT within six weeks.
WHAT DO WE NEED TO RAISE?
To date, we have received donations of £15,000 & three pledges of interest-free loans on a five year term totalling £75,000.  This means that, although we are more than half way to securing the £170,000 needed, we will need to replace the loan element from other sources.  The success of last year’s TRIO campaign should ensure that we can repay the loans.  We do have reserves, only recently accumulated, but these may well be needed in the near future for other expenditures, like the internal decoration of the church & to meet other more outreach-based initiatives.  As things stand today, we are looking to raise the remaining £80,000 through donations, many of which can be gift-aided, or from further interest free loans over five years or six months, which help fund the VAT payments.
HOW CAN WE RESPOND?
First of all do come on Sunday morning to hear Rebecca, our vicar, at both services.  Afterwards please PRAY to help you decide what you can give.  There will a more detailed leaflet with a response form in church over the next few weeks.  When you’re ready, place your response in the envelope provided and return it to Shawn Baggs, our Treasurer, in his pigeon hole.
