Romanian Shoeboxes

Those of you who came to our Community Café in October will remember that we were packing Christmas shoeboxes to send to Romania. Sunnyside has had strong links with Romania, ever since Brian Porter took a group of us out to help build/restore an orphanage there.  Since then the orphanage has closed, but we helped to build and develop a Christian conference centre and centre for disabled children.  Many Sunnysiders have joined work parties and made the trip, (two have even settled there) while others have donated funds or prayed for that impoverished community.

Every year, together a local primary schools, we ask members of our congregation, and their friends, to provide a shoebox full of Christmas gifts – toys, games as well as practical things like toothbrushes and warm clothing.  Several of us have met together to make hats, scarves, sock monkeys and other stuffed toys to delight children who have so little.  One box will go to each family – so the items get multiple use. Its a great way to practically share the love of God, especially in the build up to Christmas.

It’s not too late to make a shoebox to send out to Romania this year! You can grab a box from church or use an old one from home, pick up a form from the lobby and return the shoebox to Sunnyside. Please note, shoeboxes must be returned by 14th November.

This year, as well as sending out shoeboxes, Jane (Brian Porter’s widow) has been particularly concerned about the future of the centre, as Government regulations say they need an additional water cistern – at a prohibitive cost for such a shoestring organisation.  If you’d like to find out more about this, and ways you can help, please take a look at the Bethlehem Christian Centre, Hunedoara.
