We’re delighted that Robby Keen from JENGA will be visiting Sunnyside this weekend and preaching at our 9 and 10.30 services. If you’re trying to remember where you’ve heard the JENGA name before, it may be because JENGA are the charity that our very own Bex Henderson volunteers with in Uganda. Robby’s visit to Sunnyside ties in very nicely with Bex’s return to Uganda (she flies out again on Monday 19th) so we’re excited to hear more from Robby as well as to pray for Bex before she departs.
Robby is the co-director of JENGA, a charity working in Mbale, Eastern Uganda. JENGA Community Development Outreach is a Christian non-profit charity made up of national employees and international volunteers working together to make a difference. They provide the basic essentials of life to the most vulnerable and needy people of Mbale through diverse and sustainable development projects by equipping Ugandans to meet their own needs and to forever change their communities. Working mostly in the urban slums and rural villages of Mbale, JENGA has been running since 2005 when Robby joined forces with a local Ugandan man in the hope of building a better world.
The name JENGA simply means “to build” in Swahili which is what they’re continuing to do today. In their own words: “We’re building relationships. We’re building up people and their communities. Together, alongside them, we’re building lasting bridges out of poverty.” Bex has been volunteering on and off with JENGA for the last three years and is preparing to head out for another stint in East Africa. Much of her work is centred in the Namatala slum in Mbale, working alongside women and children. As well as this, Bex works with the most vulnerable in the community as part of an Alcoholics Anonymous group. It’s a great privilege for us to welcome Robby to preach on Bex’s last Sunday at Sunnyside – do come and join us as we pray for her, as well as the work of Jenga.
