By popular request, we are having another of these Weeks in October. It is a great opportunity to go on a prayer-retreat for a week, without having to go away or stopping your normal life. The aim of these Weeks is to help retreatants engage more deeply with their prayer-life – and also to help bridge the apparent gap between prayer and ordinary life. Retreatants commit themselves to half an hour of prayer a day on their own during the Week, plus another half an hour a day seeing their prayer guide. The guides are all trained spiritual directors, and they listen to what each person brings and make suggestions for them to pray with that evening or the next day. These suggestions include different ways of praying and pieces of Scripture that seem relevant to what each retreatant is exploring. The guides don’t tell the retreatants what to do; rather, they listen with the retreatant to what God might be saying to them, and which supports and encourages them. Everyone is invited to come exactly as they are, and no level of prayer or faith, experience as a Christian or Bible-knowledge is assumed or indeed needed. It is also a great time to bring one’s doubts, fears and questions in a supportive and confidential place.
The Week starts with an evening gathering on Sunday October 13th where retreatants meet their prayer-guide, ask any questions they might have and sort out their time-table for the next 6 days. The evening will also include a led meditation on the Bible-passage which is our starting theme. The Week then ends, for those who can make it, with a celebratory gathering for all in the Court House on Sunday 20th in the afternoon.
It is also possible to do just the first or the second half of the Week: Monday to Wednesday or Thursday to Saturday, though there are currently more places available for the second half. The cost is £60 for the whole Week and £30 for half the Week, for those who can afford it; this helps cover costs.
