Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.’
What is happening?
There is much that needs prayer in the world and in Sunnyside at present so we are having a day of prayer and fasting. In particular, we will be focusing on praying for our nation (the parliamentary elections are the following day) and for Jonas (our prospective Worship Team Leader) who is taking an English exam for his visa application on Saturday 14th December.
Why prayer and fasting?
There is a long tradition of fasting when we are praying. It is something Jesus taught us to do and Christians have done ever since. It helps us to focus on our dependence on God and shows how serious we are about the things we are praying for.
How to get involved
Praying Our 9.30 service will focus on the day of prayer and fasting. There will be a prayer meeting in church 6pm-6.45pm. Think about how you could pray through the day: perhaps pray when you would have eaten or made a drink; or set an alarm on your phone to remind you to pray every hour; or pray as you are travelling between places. It doesn’t matter when you pray, remember: pray as you can, not as you can’t!
Fasting Think about what you could do: you could miss a meal or two; or you could restrict the variety of food or drink you have for the day. The idea is that you give up something you will miss to help you focus on God and come to understand in a new way that it is in God that our deepest desires are met. There will be bread and soup in the Vicarage at 7pm as we break our fast. Everyone is very welcome! You shouldn’t fast from food if it is not safe for you to do so. If you can’t give up food, what else could you give up for the day?
