Tearfund Quiz 2022

Saturday 19th November 2022 saw Sunnyside and friends meeting for the Tearfund Big Quiz Night 2022 and what a fantastic time the 45 of us in Church all had! (44 quizzers and Katie Randall-Stratton as Quizmaster again). Our quizzers were part of the 334 churches and 13,386 quizzers contributing to the astounding current Tearfund total of £59,173!!

Six teams competed against each other with very close scores across the eight newly spiced up rounds! – art and literature, current events, geography, historical firsts, music and film, sports, science and nature, and an intriguing round titled potato, pear, apple or banana which proved to live up to its name!! Finishing scores ranged 36 to 42, with three teams all on 42!

We Wish We Knew The Answers” (Penny Wager, Tony Wager, Emily Wager, Rhiann Pawson, Trev Hitchings, Chris Hitchings, Sharon Fowler) took home the wooden spoon, with Sharon being gifted the spoon as one of her leaving presents! A three-way tie-breaker then commenced for “Still Bitter Lemons” (Jane Lines, Tim Lines, Iris Webb, Andrew Webb, Sophie Webb, Amy Webb, Rebecca Fardell), “51%” (Hilary Kemp, Steven Kemp, Jane Wood, Nick Wood, John Kirkby, Pam Davis, Lucy Whittingham, Ruth Colderwood), and “Samson and the Lightning Seeds” (Su Whybrow, Pat Whybrow, Kate Smith, Howard Smith, Hannah Smith, Steve Tierney, Karen Tierney, Samson Randall-Stratton).

None of the teams guessed correctly that Sir James Dyson produced 5,126 failed prototypes before producing the first working Dyson vacuum cleaner. So it was on to a second tie-breaker question! – If Dr No is Bond 1, what is No Time to Die? (with the added caveat to the quizmaster to accept closest without going above).

The “Still Bitter Lemons” were unable to retain their top spot as went with 26 which was over. I think Pam Davis secretly wanted a third wooden spoon to add to her collection however I’m pleased to report this year she was on the winning team as they wrote 22!

Well done to the “51%” team on being crowned Tearfund Quiz 2022 winners and winning a big box of chocolates! “Samson and the Lightning Seeds” plumped for 20, which meant they took home the second prize smaller box of chocs. We also had a fun game of Heads and Tails, with Amy Webb winning half of the pot!

In 2019 we raised an incredible £637, in 2020 we beat that raising £683.75, and in 2021 we smashed our previous efforts raising an amazing £806! As it stands for 2022 we’ve raised approximately £500 including gift aid which is brilliant, thank you all. Still time to donate for those who couldn’t come but would like to support the cause: https://www.justgiving.com/page/katie-randall-stratton-1666823728799

I’m pleased to report, starting with the quiz in 2019, over the last four years we’ve raised over £2,600 for Tearfund through the quizzes!!!

Many thanks to all those who had baked for Community Cafe and allowed me to raise extra funds for Tearfund in the evening using leftovers, Tim Lines for tech support, and everyone who got the church back ready again – particularly Rebecca Fardell as we kept realising ‘Oh this needs to be done too’!

I’ll let you know when we hear the definite 2023 ‘save the date’ however I suggest you hold Saturdays 11th and 18th November 2023 in your diaries for now. Samson said he wants to be there again next year so I definitely have one signed up already!
