The first Sunnyside Community Quiz was held on Sunday 29th January 2023 in Church. Hosting an indoor community event was one of Mission Action Group’s (consisting of Peter Hyatt, Penny Harrison, Diana White, Katie Randall-Stratton and staff representatives) annual goals. We are pleased to report the event was a success! Six teams – with participants ranging in age from 7 to 80+, and representing roads in our parish, members of the Sunnyside Walking Group, house groups, and our congregation and families – came together for a wonderful couple of hours, hosted by Quizmaster Katie. Fellowship and friendship was enjoyed, as well as tasty treats (a vast selection of hot drinks, cakes and crisps on offer!). The quiz consisted of nine rounds in total, with a mixture of picture rounds, an audio round and mixed other rounds with questions ranging from “What type of creature is a Red Admiral”, to “The spice saffron comes from which flower” to “What is 25 squared”. We also played an interval game of Heads and Tails, with Chris Cartwright taking home a box of Heroes chocolates – a fitting prize as Chris had been cajoler extraordinaire!
After Round 5 there was only five points difference between the top and the bottom teams, however by Round 7 this difference had increased to ten points – and by the end the team finishing last got 41 whereas the winners scored 53.5 (out of a maximum 70 points), closely followed by second place with 53. Taking home the wooden spoon this time were the ‘Walkie Talkies’ (consisting of Anne, George, Jim, Marion, Roz, Jonathan and Ginny). Second place, and winning one box of Heroes, went to ‘We’re sorry we haven’t a clue’ (Richard Lynn and his family Julian, James and Marianne, plus John Kirkby), who showed they did actually have a clue about a lot of answers! Winners of the first Sunnyside Community Quiz were the Charizard Winners (Howard, Kate and Hannah, Hannah’s friends Holly and Jeremy, plus Samson) – Samson was particularly happy as he seemed to get a generous share from the two Heroes boxes they won!
It was brilliant to have folks in Church who may not normally come or haven’t been for a long time and there has been some lovely feedback about the event including “We all had a good laugh and enjoyed the fun afternoon“ and “Thank you. I haven’t enjoyed myself so much for a long time!…Please book me in for the next quiz!“ – and you can see from the photos folks definitely enjoyed themselves!
Let’s try and build on our successful quiz format and see an even bigger turnout for the Tearfund Quiz 2023 in November! (Tearfund still to confirm the date).
P.S Answers to the questions above: Butterfly; Crocus Flower; 625.
